HISTORY

The Historical Society was formed in 1966 by a group of citizens from Logan and the county. One of these citizens was Judge Harley Myers. He contacted interested persons to see if a society could be formed.

The will of Margaret Lutz had stated that if a historical society was formed the steam automobile built by her father and his machine shop were to go to the society. Thus the first meeting was held in the Court House. Over the following years the Historical Society has held its meetings in several places until a permanent home was established. Some of the places for the meetings were the Court House, the Ohio Power Company meeting room, and the undercroft of St. Paul’s’ Episcopal Church.

In 1977, the Historical Society purchased the Clarence Schempp property on the corner of North Culver and East Hunter Streets. In 1981, the Society started to have its regular meetings in the Schempp House.

Since that time the Society has restored the house to the 1890’s and repaired the Carriage House for historical displays. IN 1988, the Lutz Machine Shop was built and the Steam Automobile was rebuilt. The Historical Center was started in 1988 and completed in 1997. While this was being built, in 1992, the Society purchased property next door.

The Print Shop was built in 1999. Since then the Stiers 1837 Conestoga wagon and other large artifacts have been displayed here.

The complex is bounded by North Culver Street, East Hunter Street and two alleys, thus giving the Society a fine place to house and display many of the historical items of Hocking County.
